“My first six months in medical communications” – views from an emotive graduate recruit

Posted:

In September 2018, Kat joined emotive through the graduate recruitment scheme after completing a Masters in Cognitive Neuroscience. Prior to her studies at UCL, she attended Kings College where she gained her BSc in Biomedical Sciences.  Six months into her role, we asked Kat to tell us about her experience so far.

What do you like most about your role at emotive?

I like how the projects I’m working on are all completely different from each other. From websites to brochures, eLearning and animations – it’s been challenging and so I’m also learning a lot, which is great. Getting to work with people across all departments is something that I also really enjoy.

What has been the most rewarding thing you’ve done since joining emotive?

“For me, being able to do a good job in all the work I do is really rewarding. Plus, I loved winning the pumpkin carving competition at Halloween!”

Is there one thing that has surprised you about the world of med comms or agency life?

I was surprised by the informal, fun atmosphere; people here are very friendly but also very hard-working. The team is good at making sure that jobs always get done to the highest standard.

Do you have any advice or comments to make to those who might want to get into medical communications?

I’d say be brave. Don’t be afraid to experiment and try a career like this. I knew very little about medical communications when I first joined, it’s been a great experience and I’m glad I took this leap of faith!

Our annual graduate recruitment scheme begins with a rotation around departments within the agency, culminating in a role in the Client Services or Medical teams. Look out for our Graduate Recruitment Day in 2019.
